Launched in Washington, D.C. over a decade ago, thousands of D.C. Public School students in grades 3 – 8 have played GeoPlunge, including a large portion from Title I schools. Teachers, school librarians, and volunteers from area businesses have coached these students in school, or after school, culminating each year in two excitement-filled, city-wide tournaments held at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery.
GeoPlunge continues to grow in Washington, D.C. in collaboration with the D.C. Public Schools and the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs Public Education Project.
In 2016, LearningPlunge teamed up with the American Geographical Society to take GeoPlunge to cities throughout the United States. Since then, new GeoPlunge events have been developed in several cities. In November 2017, The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency used GeoPlunge to launch it’s Partners in Education program at the elementary school level.
